Understanding the NDIS Reforms and the New NDIS Bill

The Australian Government is making changes to improve the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) for participants, their families and carers. These reforms are based on recommendations from the NDIS Review.

The first tranche of legislative amendments is in the National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Getting the NDIS Back on Track No 1) Bill 2024. The Bill aims to improve the participant experience by:

  • Taking a whole of person approach
  • Improving service quality and safeguards
  • Reforming participant pathways

What does this mean for NDIS participants?

The NDIS reforms are designed to make the NDIS fairer, more flexible and more responsive to the needs of participants. The reforms will also help to ensure that the NDIS is sustainable in the long term.

A whole of person approach

The NDIS will take a more holistic approach to consider all aspects of a participant’s life, including their physical, social, and emotional needs. This will help to ensure that participants receive the support they need to live a full and productive life.

Improved service quality and safeguards

The reforms will introduce a number of measures to improve the quality of services delivered under the NDIS. This includes strengthening safeguards to protect participants from abuse and neglect.

Reformed participant pathways

The NDIS will be streamlined to make it easier for participants to access the support they need. This includes reforms to the planning process and the way services are delivered.

The future of the NDIS

The NDIS reforms are a positive step forward for people with disability in Australia. The reforms will help to ensure that the NDIS is sustainable in the long term and continues to provide the support that participants need to live a full and productive life.
